Plan for the Abaco Islands

Post by svcheshirecat »

We will approach the Abaco islands from the southern tip of the Berry Islands, near Chub Cay. Sail around the southern tip of the Abaco islands and around the outer edge of the Abaco coral reef. There is a cut at Little Harbor where you can enter into the Sea of Abaco, but it is somewhat narrow with breakers on each side. A better option might be the North Bar Channel, which is popular. The North Bar Channel is located just north of Lynyard Cay and just south of the Pelican Cays, and offers good access into the Sea of Abaco.

Our time in Abaco is largely dependent on two things. Weather and visitors. Regarding visitors, Abaco has a decent airport and is a good place for visitors to fly into before we head south for more remote destinations, next being Eleuthera. For Mateo and I, we have already sailed many trips in the Abaco islands, so we only need to visit places to remember and reminisce. We want to visit Hope Town with the lighthouse on Elbow Cay, Nippers and Grabbers on Great Guana Cay, and of course Marsh Harbor on Great Abaco Island, which has the airport, good grocery stores, and we want to see if the Abaco Queen is still docked at the Marsh Harbor marina. Our sailing itinerary and time spent in the Abaco islands is TBD.

From Abaco, we will sail south to the more remote Eleuthera. For visitors there are also flights from the US to Governor's Harbor, Eleuthera.
